Kamrul Islam injured after falling in prison toilet
Former Food Minister Kamrul Islam was injured after slipping and falling in the toilet of the holding cell while attending a court hearing in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The incident took place around 11:30am on Monday (May 25) at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court holding cell. During the fall, he hit his head and sustained a wound. He was given first aid afterward.
Kamrul Islam’s lawyer, Nasim Mahmud, confirmed the information to the media.
He said, “He (Kamrul Islam) slipped in the toilet and suffered a head injury on the back side. His head was bleeding. After bandaging him at the holding cell, he was sent to the Keraniganj Central Jail Hospital.”
He added, “He has been in jail since last November in connection with a case related to the Anti-Discrimination Movement. His health is deteriorating. He is suffering from multiple illnesses, including stomach cancer. He is very sick and has lost weight. Today was a scheduled hearing for the ACC case, and he was brought to court. He was kept in the holding cell.”
Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Prosecution Division, Tarek Zobayer, said, “He is a high blood pressure patient and has been unwell for some time. Today, he was brought to court for his scheduled hearing. After arriving at the holding cell, Kamrul Islam went to the toilet, and due to high blood pressure, he felt dizzy and fell. He was injured in the fall. We gave him primary treatment and then sent him to the Keraniganj jail hospital with the court’s permission.”
On November 18 last year, Kamrul Islam was arrested by police from Sector 12 of Uttara in the capital. The next day, November 19, he was taken on remand in connection with a murder case filed at New Market Police Station. In addition, there are several other murder cases against him, and he has been placed on remand multiple times.
