Karail slum fire brought under control after 5 hours
The terrible fire that broke out in the capital's Karail slum has been brought under control after about five hours of effort.
The fire, which started at 5:22pm on Tuesday (November 25), was brought under control by the Fire Service and Civil Defense at 10:35pm.
Anwarul Islam Dolon, an officer of the media cell of the Fire Service Headquarters, said that the firefighters had to work very hard to put out the fire due to the dense area of the slum and the severe water shortage at the scene.
Fire Service officials said that more than a hundred houses in the slum have been completely burnt down as the fire has taken a terrible shape. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
Upon receiving the news of the fire, 16 units of the Fire Service were initially working at the scene. Later, considering the situation, the units were increased to about 20.
Due to the delay in reaching the scene initially, the fire spread quickly. It took about 30 to 35 minutes for the first unit to reach. The narrow roads, traffic jams and crowds of people made it difficult for large vehicles to reach the fire. The firefighters also said that some unruly behavior among the large crowd at the scene also hindered the firefighting efforts. There were incidents of cutting pipes, untying them and scuffles with law enforcement officers.
One of the largest slums in the capital is Karail. Due to the narrow roads, dense population, flammable construction materials and uncontrolled electricity and gas connections, fires spread quickly here. In recent years, many families in the slum have been affected by several major fire incidents.
