Khagrachhari violence: 3 cases filed following deadly clashes
Police have registered three cases, including one for murder, in connection with violent clashes in Khagrachhari Sadar and Guimara upazilas during a blockade over allegations of a teenage girl’s rape.
One case was filed at Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, and two separate cases were registered at Guimara Police Station. The charges include murder, vandalism, attacks on police, and violation of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. At Khagrachhari Sadar, authorities named 600–700 unidentified individuals in connection with creating unrest and assaulting law enforcement.
In Guimara, two cases were filed against 250–300 unidentified people over murder and attacks on police, confirmed OC Enamul Haq Chowdhury. He added that the situation in Guimara has now returned to normal.
Meanwhile, Shayon Shil, arrested over the student rape allegation, was sent to court Wednesday afternoon after six days in police remand. Abdul Baten Mridha, OC of Khagrachhari Sadar, confirmed that the accused was subsequently sent to jail.
On Thursday, the day of the weekly market, people from both the hill and Bengali communities returned to the marketplace, traffic flowed normally on all roads, and shops reopened. Section 144 remains in effect across the area.
