Khaleda Zia laid to rest with state honours
Former prime minister, Bangladesh’s first woman premier and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was laid to rest with full state honours on Wednesday afternoon (December 31).
She was buried shortly after 4:30pm at Zia Udyan in Dhaka, beside the grave of her late husband, former president Ziaur Rahman.
Earlier, her namaaj-e-janaza was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and the adjoining Manik Mia Avenue, where a massive number of mourners gathered from across the country to pay their final respects.
Foreign representatives from several countries attended the funeral to pay tribute, alongside leaders and activists from various political parties in Bangladesh.
The state-honoured funeral was attended by Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus, advisers from different ministries, and the chiefs of the armed forces.
Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, along with senior party leaders, remained present throughout the funeral and burial proceedings.
