Khan Jahan Ali shrine pond crocodile being shifted to Sundarbans

The district administration has decided to transfer the crocodile in the pond adjacent to the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (RA) in Bagerhat to the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center in the Sundarbans.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting held at 10 pm on Tuesday (June 2) considering the safety of domestic and foreign visitors and devotees visiting the shrine.

Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Mohammad Baten presided over the meeting held at the conference room of the district administration.

After the meeting, he said that to ensure the safety of visitors, it has been decided to transfer the crocodile currently in the pond to the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center in the Sundarbans.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer of Bagerhat East Sundarbans Division, said that a team of experts from Khulna will come to Bagerhat on Wednesday to complete the process of removing the crocodile from the pond of the shrine. They will monitor the situation and determine the strategy for catching the crocodile, the time of its transfer and other necessary matters.

Seven-year-old child Fatema Akhtar was attacked by a crocodile while taking a bath in a pond adjacent to the shrine around 8 pm on Monday.

According to eyewitnesses, the crocodile grabbed the child's leg and dragged her under the water. Later, her body was recovered from the Mahila Ghat area of ​​the pond adjacent to the shrine early Tuesday morning.

After this tragic incident, concern spread among local residents, visitors and devotees. At the same time, there were demands to strengthen security measures in the shrine area and to quickly remove the crocodile. In view of this, an emergency meeting of the district administration decided to transfer the crocodile to the Sundarbans.
