Kohinoor Mia promoted to Additional DIG 15 years after dismissal
The government has granted a retrospective promotion to former police officer Md Kohinoor Mia, elevating him to the rank of Additional Deputy Inspector General, nearly 15 years after he was dismissed from service. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on Sunday, April 12, confirming the promotion.
Earlier, on March 9, the government decided to treat his dismissal period as active service, entitling him to all associated benefits and allowances.
According to the notification, Kohinoor Mia was dismissed from service following two departmental cases. However, he was acquitted by courts in the criminal cases filed on the same charges. His dismissal order was subsequently annulled after the president approved a review petition seeking reconsideration of his punishment.
The period of his dismissal will be counted as active service, and he will receive all back pay, allowances and other benefits in accordance with service rules. The order takes effect immediately.
Kohinoor Mia was serving as Deputy Commissioner (West) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) when he was dismissed on February 22, 2011, during the Awami League government's tenure. He belongs to the 12th BCS batch and hails from Sadarpur upazila in Faridpur.
He was considered an influential police officer during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government between 2001 and 2006. He drew significant public attention in 2006 following an alleged police torture incident involving a woman and her young son in Dhanmondi. A case was filed against him, but he was later acquitted.
Additionally, he was named as a suspect in a double murder case from the Nandail municipal election violence in 2004, which claimed two lives. After a lengthy legal process, he was also acquitted of those charges.
Following his acquittal in court, the government withdrew the administrative punishment and granted him the promotion.
