KU women's hall canteen worker, wife sued over secret filminmg

The administration of Khulna University (KU) has filed a case against a canteen worker and his wife over allegations of secretly recording videos inside the washroom of a women's residence hall, as the university announced a series of measures, including a ban on male workers in female hall canteens.

The case was filed on Thursday (July 23) with Horintana Police Station by Acting Registrar Prof Dr SM Mahbubur Rahman against Imam Hasan, 24, a canteen worker at Bijoy-24 Hall, and his wife Rupa Moni.

Imam Hasan was later produced before a court, which ordered him to be sent to jail.

The incident came to light on Wednesday night after female students allegedly discovered a mobile phone hidden inside a washroom to secretly record videos. The accused was detained by students before being handed over to police.

In protest, students locked the university's administrative building on Thursday, disrupting academic and administrative activities while demanding a fair investigation and stronger campus security.

Following emergency meetings, the university formed a five-member investigation committee, directing it to submit its report within three working days. Authorities also cancelled the canteen allocation operated by the accused and banned staff from carrying mobile phones inside the residence halls.

The university further decided to introduce a new management policy for the canteens at Aparajita Hall and Bijoy-24 Hall, under which no male employees will be allowed to work in the canteens of women's residence halls.

The meetings also reviewed ongoing investigations into sexual harassment allegations against two university teachers, instructing the inquiry committee to submit its findings within seven working days.

Meanwhile, the university extended the current semester's registration deadline until August 4 without a late fee and from August 5 to 11 with a late fee to minimise disruption for students.
