KUET students launch hunger strike demanding removal of VC
Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have initiated a hunger strike, demanding the dismissal of Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Muhammad Masud.
The hunger strike began at 4:00pm on Monday (April 21), at the university's Student Welfare Center, following a large gathering in front of Dr MA Rashid Hall at 3:30pm. Some senior teachers of KUET went to the spot and tried half-an-hour to convince the students.
Earlier in the morning, KUET's Student Welfare Director Professor Dr Abdullah Ilyas Akhter called on the students to hold a discussion to resolve the issue and end up the strike. He said, "We have spoken to the students. We hope they can reconsider their decision."
37 students who were temporarily expelled have been assured of a review and none of the innocent individual will be punished, the university administration said in a press briefing.
Raju Ahmed, assistant director of the Student Welfare Department and assistant professor, said, "We will provide necessary assistance in court to the students named in the case, and efforts are underway to have the case withdrawn."
"There is no involvement from the KUET administration in instigating the case," he added.
