Kushtia district election office set on fire

Arsonists set fire to the Senior District Election Officer’s office in Kushtia on Saturday morning (December 20).

According to officials, the incident took place around 8:30am when the glass of a rear window was broken and fire was set inside the building.

Upon receiving the news, District Commissioner Iqbal Hossain visited the site at 9:30am and later held an emergency closed-door meeting with election office staff at 10:00am.

Security guard Razzak said he noticed smoke while on the second floor, rushed downstairs, and managed to extinguish the fire with nearby water.

Accounts officer Md Asaduzzaman stated that the fire occurred in the storeroom of the Sadar Upazila election office, where important voter data is stored. The extent of any damage remains unclear.

Kushtia Police Superintendent Mohammad Jasim Uddin said the police have inspected the site and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and identify the perpetrators.
