Thieves have stolen electrical wires from lamp posts on the newly inaugurated Maulana Bhasani Bridge, leaving the entire bridge in darkness and raising safety concerns for pedestrians and vehicles.

Uzzal Chowdhury, Executive Engineer of Gaibandha LGED, confirmed the theft on Sunday, saying the incident occurred sometime the day after the bridge’s inauguration. “The culprits will be identified and strict legal action will follow. Work to restore electricity is already underway,” he added. Authorities are also considering 24-hour police security on the bridge.

Locals and commuters reported difficulty crossing the bridge after sunset due to the lack of lighting, increasing the risk of accidents. They urged authorities to restore power quickly and implement stronger security measures to prevent future thefts.

Abdul Hakim Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Sundarganj Police Station, said, “Complaints will be investigated thoroughly, and strict legal action will be taken. A temporary police camp will be set up soon, and approval for a permanent camp has been requested.”

The Maulana Bhasani Bridge, inaugurated on 20 August by Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, has already become a popular destination, attracting thousands of visitors daily.
