Land office employee sacked after bribery video goes viral

An employee of the Tanore upazila land office in Rajshahi has been temporarily suspended after a video of him taking bribes went viral on social media.

Imrul Kashem Emon, a mutation-cum-certificate assistant at the land office, was suspended through an order signed by Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam on Wednesday, August 27.

According to sources, there had been long-standing allegations against Emon of taking bribes and harassing people in exchange for mutation and certificate-related services at the Tanore upazila land office.

Recently, a video of the bribe transaction was aired on a television channel. Based on specific complaints from victims and the broadcast report, a preliminary investigation was conducted. As prima facie evidence of irregularities and corruption against Emon was found, disciplinary action was taken.

Copies of the DC office order have been sent to the concerned officials for their information. At the same time, the Tanore upazila assistant commissioner (land) has been directed to prepare a chargesheet and detailed report and submit it to the DC office.

Following the news of Emon's suspension, local victims have expressed relief. They have demanded a corruption-free land office service, along with a proper investigation and transparency in the complaints.

Locals alleged that they had long faced harassment and extortion when seeking various services at the land office. They demanded effective measures to ensure fast and hassle-free land services.

When contacted, Tanore Upazila Land Office Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shib Shankar Basak said, "The deputy commissioner has temporarily suspended Imrul Kashem Emon, the mutation-cum-certificate assistant of my office. Necessary action will be taken against him as per rules."
