Landslides kill 11 in Cox's Bazar as heavy rain continues
One more woman has died in a landslide in Cox's Bazar, bringing the total death toll from such incidents to 11 since Sunday, July 5. The latest fatality occurred on Tuesday afternoon, July 7, in Daryanagar area of Sadar upazila, where four others, including a child, were also injured.
Earlier on Monday, a body was recovered from the Chhattar Ghona area of Cox's Bazar municipality following another landslide. The deaths have been reported across multiple locations, including seven in Rohingya camps in Ukhia.
Between 1:00 am and 3:30 am on Monday, three separate landslides struck Ukhia camps. In Camp 15, three members of the same family, including a child, were killed. In Camp 11, four members of one family lost their lives. In Camp 7, a seven-year-old child named Ekram died. The deceased in Camp 15 were identified as Kamal Hossain, 44; his wife Humaira Begum, 39; and their four-year-old son Md Anas.
Fire service and Rohingya volunteers conducted rescue operations throughout the night, recovering the bodies and rescuing seven others alive. A child also died in a landslide in Pekua upazila on Monday afternoon.
Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ohidur Rahman urged residents to avoid staying near hillsides or other at-risk areas until the weather improves. He stressed that following administration directives could help prevent further casualties.
