Landslides triggered by continuous rainfall disrupt life in Bandarban
Continuous rainfall and mountain runoff, caused by a low-pressure system, have triggered landslides in various parts of Bandarban, severely disrupting communication and causing widespread hardship. In fear of casualties, authorities are evacuating residents from vulnerable hillside settlements to safer locations.
A total of 220 shelters have been opened across the 34 unions of the district’s seven upazilas. Public announcements are being made urging people at risk, including those affected, to take refuge in these shelters.
Since Tuesday (July 8), heavy rain and upstream water have caused the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers to swell, nearing danger levels. Between Tuesday and Wednesday (July 9) at 3 PM, 107 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in a 24-hour period.
A major landslide occurred late Tuesday night in Ashrompara under Ruma Upazila’s Sadar Union, sparking panic among locals. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
On Wednesday morning, a landslide in Mirinja under Lama Upazila blocked the Lama-Ali Kadam and Mirinja tourist roads with debris, temporarily halting traffic. However, prompt action by the local administration and relevant agencies restored traffic within a few hours.
Minor landslides also occurred on internal roads including Ruma-Thanchi, Lama-Suwalok, Roangchhari-Ruma, and Thanchi-Ali Kadam routes, leaving mud and debris on the roads and making them slippery and hazardous.
Sanatan Kumar Mondol, Acting Officer of the District Meteorological Department, said the rainfall is likely to continue for another couple of days. He urged people living at the base of hills to move to safer locations.
