SM Siddiqui, the younger brother of former MP Latif Siddiqui and politician Bangabir Quader Siddiqui, was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday (September 5) while attempting to travel to Bangkok.

According to airport immigration sources, Siddiqui arrived at the airport in the morning with his wife to board a flight to Bangkok. However, during immigration checks, officials discovered that he was under a travel ban and was therefore barred from leaving the country. The couple was later sent back from the departure area.

SM Siddiqui is the former chairman of Kalihati Upazila in Tangail district. His detention follows a recent incident involving his brother, Latif Siddiqui.

On August 28, Latif Siddiqui, Dhaka University law professor Hafizur Rahman, journalist Manjurul Alam Panna, and others participated in a roundtable discussion organized by ‘Mancha 71’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). Shortly after the event, a group entered the venue and blocked the participants inside.

Police later intervened and detained 16 individuals, including Latif Siddiqui, Professor Hafizur Rahman, and Panna.

The next day, they were sent to jail under a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
