Improving the law and order situation is the government's top priority, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said.

He made the remarks in a message on the occasion of National Police Week 2026 on Saturday, May 9. A four-day programme for the week will begin on Sunday.

The prime minister said the current government is implementing a detailed programme to establish a prosperous, self-reliant, just, democratic and humane state. However, if people do not feel secure and safe at home and outside, achieving this goal will become difficult.

He said the police force has no alternative in maintaining law and order, preventing crime and ensuring the security of people's lives and property. But if the police can build a relationship of trust and confidence with the people, the path to performing their duties becomes much easier.

The prime minister said after more than a decade and a half, a democratic government has been established in the country through a free, fair and impartial election. Peace and comfort have returned to the public.

He said the people now want to see a state and society free from the culture of extrajudicial killings, abduction and fear, where there will be no fear for lives and property, no fear of injustice, lawlessness or oppression. The role of the police force is paramount in maintaining such an expected situation.

Tarique Rahman further said the police have performed their duties with utmost professionalism and dedication in every national need and crisis. The police's role in the recently held national parliamentary election proved that they are fully capable of performing their duties efficiently in a suitable and favourable environment.

He said Bangladesh Police have proven their success not only at home but also on the international stage. Their glorious contribution to UN peacekeeping missions has enhanced Bangladesh's prestige in the world. However, modernisation and capacity enhancement of the police are essential in the changed global reality.

The prime minister further said that law and order development, crime prevention and police development are closely linked with national progress. Therefore, the government considers investment in police development as an essential part of public safety.

Tarique Rahman said ensuring a stable law and order situation is crucial to continue the democratic journey. Police must play a more effective role in preventing mob violence, juvenile gangs and the spread of drugs.

Noting that a professional and responsible police force is essential for state stability and public trust, the prime minister said Police Week should become an occasion to fulfil the pledge to become trustworthy to the people.

He extended his sincere greetings and congratulations to all current and former officers and members of Bangladesh Police on the occasion of Police Week 2026, and wished the force overall success and prosperity.
