Lawyer stabbed to death in Bagerhat

A lawyer was stabbed to death by some assailants in Bagerhat town late Friday night (July 24).

The deceased, Advocate Nizam Uddin Shanto, 42, was a member of the Bagerhat District Bar Association and hailed from Paschimbhag village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila. He was the son of Torab Ali.

According to police and local sources, Nizam Uddin was returning home after finishing work in Bagerhat town when he came under attack around 1:00am in the Harikhali Tetultala area. A group of unidentified attackers stabbed him multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Local residents alerted the police through the national emergency service 999. Officers rushed to the spot, recovered the body and later sent it to the Bagerhat District 250-bed Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Law enforcement agencies have launched an intensive operation to identify and apprehend those involved in the killing. However, the motive behind the attack and the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shamsul Arefin of Bagerhat Sadar Police Station said the lawyer was attacked while returning home.

"Police recovered the body shortly after the incident and sent it for post-mortem examination. Operations are underway to identify and arrest those responsible," the OC said.
