Lawyer’s body recovered from in Dhaka flat

Police recovered the body of a lawyer from his rented flat in Dhaka’s Lalbagh area on Saturday (September 12), with officers suspecting he had died two to three days earlier.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Anwar Hossain, an advocate at the Judge’s Court. He lived alone in a rented flat on the second floor of a building at 10/1, Lane 3 in Bowbazar, Shahidnagar.

Police said a neighbouring tenant noticed a foul smell coming from Anwar’s flat and alerted authorities after finding him dead inside. Lalbagh police recovered the body around 11:30am and began legal procedures, while a Criminal Investigation Department crime scene team also inspected the flat.

Police initially suspect Anwar may have died of a stroke, but the exact cause will be established through an autopsy. His body was being prepared for transfer to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.

Anwar had a chamber in Room 214 on the first floor of the Dhaka Bar Association Annex Building.

Mohammad Jamil Hossain, officer in-charge (OC) of Lalbagh Police Station, said, "Anwar’s driving licence was in police custody and officers were verifying his identity and attempting to contact his family, who are believed to live in a village."

Police said an inquest and other necessary legal procedures were underway. The cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report, police said.
