Legal action if disorder is created: Port Chairman
An indefinite strike is ongoing at Chittagong Port over the decision to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to the UAE-based company DP World, along with three other demands. Although the programme by port workers and employees began from 8:00 am on Sunday, February 8, Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman has claimed that the situation at Chittagong Port is normal.
He said workers and employees have reported for duty. If anyone creates disorder, law enforcement agencies will take legal action against them.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists in front of the port building at noon. Earlier, from 10:00 am, he held meetings with officers and workers.
S M Moniruzzaman said a few misguided employees have chosen this path to hold the port hostage and hold the public to ransom. "We are officers and employees of the state. Our loyalty must be to the state. We must respect the laws and institutions under which the port operates. If anyone becomes misguided and pledges allegiance to someone else, it is completely contrary to the code of conduct for officers and employees."
He further stated that those carrying out these movements have taken a stand against the state and the people. They are planning to create public discontent through such programmes ahead of Ramadan.
In response to a question, the Port Chairman said the port is operational. "I have been speaking with port officers and employees for two hours. They will all go to work. If anyone obstructs, action will be taken under the prevailing laws."
He also mentioned that discussions or negotiations regarding handing over the management of NCT to DP World are not yet complete.
The Port Chairman said the 13th National Parliament election will be held on February 12. "I went to the meeting with officers and employees this morning after casting my postal ballot. I urged everyone to vote. One party is creating disorder at the port with the aim of casting doubt on the election. The election cannot be disrupted under any circumstances."
