Legal notice sent seeking removal of Darwin’s evolution theory from textbooks
Barrister Sarwar Hossain, a Supreme Court lawyer, has sent a legal notice to the relevant government offices, demanding the removal of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution from textbooks for grades 9 and 10.
The notice was sent on Sunday (August 17) to the Ministry of Education and other concerned authorities. He has stated that if action is not taken promptly, he will file a writ petition in the High Court.
Speaking to journalists, Barrister Sarwar Hossain said, “Darwin’s theory of evolution was included in the curriculum for grades 9 and 10 during the previous government. This has been discussed and criticized in parliament. In many countries, including in the Cambridge curriculum, this topic is not taught at the secondary level.”
He claimed that the subject creates confusion among young students. Cambridge curriculum does not include it at the secondary level either. Therefore, in public interest, he has sent a notice to the Ministry of Education and other authorities to remove the theory of evolution from the textbooks starting from the next academic year.
He further said, “If no action is taken after the notice, we will approach the court. As Muslims, we believe that humanity began from Adam (A.) and Eve (A.). But evolution claims that humans evolved from monkeys. This topic may be included at the university level for research purposes, but it should not be taught at the secondary level, especially in a country where 92% of the population is Muslim.”
