Lightning kills 3-month-old baby in Sajek, injures 5

A three-month-old baby has died in a lightning strike in Rangamati's Sajek area. Five more members of the same family were injured in the same incident.

The incident took place around 4:30am in the Bhaibachhra area of ​​Sajek union in Baghaichhari upazila on Monday (May 25).

The deceased child has been identified as Ujjwal Chakma, 3 months. The injured are Pradeep Chakma, 65, Maya Rani Chakma, 48, Reshmi Chakma, 28, Jerin Chakma, 15 and Nizum Chakma, 3.

Sajek Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tofazzal Hossain confirmed the incident.

According to local sources, the family members were sleeping in a bamboo and tin-roofed house when the lightning started in the middle of the night along with strong winds and rain. The lightning suddenly struck the house directly. The child died while sleeping and other family members were injured.

Later, locals rescued them and first took them to Dighinala Upazila Health Complex. When their condition deteriorated, they were later sent to Khagrachhari General Hospital for better treatment.
