Lightning strike kills 3 in Brahmanbaria

Three people, including an 8-year-old child, were killed by lightning strikes in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Sunday (May 11) around 4:30pm in three separate incidents.

Nasirnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahina Nasrin confirmed the information to the media.

The deceased are, Jakia Akter, 8, from Kachua village in Chatolpar Union, Shamsul Huda, 70 from Gokorn village in Gokorn Union, Razzak Mia, 40, a seasonal farm worker from Kalikachchha village in Sarail upazila.

Tarun Mia, a member of the Volakut Union Parishad, said, "Jakia had come to visit her uncle's house and went to the field with him to observe how paddy is dried. She died on the spot due to a lightning strike. Several other children were injured."

Gokorn Union Parishad Chairman Syed Shaheen said, "Shamsul Huda had gone to inspect his rice field. Locals found his body in the field after the lightning strike and informed the police."

Locals also reported that Razzak Mia, a seasonal laborer, was harvesting paddy in Tekanagar when he was struck by lightning and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, Hamida Begum, 50, from Volakut Union was injured while drying paddy. Her throat was burned, and doctors at the upazila health complex said she was referred to Brahmanbaria District Hospital for further treatment.

UNO Shahina Nasrin said, "The death of three people in one day due to lightning is heartbreaking. People need to be more cautious during such natural disasters."

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nasirnagar Police Station, Md. Khairul Alam, said, "The bodies were handed over to their families without autopsy, as there were no complaints from the families."
