Little girl feeds tea-bread to father tied to post all night, released after video spreads

Anik Sardar, a young man in Uzirpur of Barisal, has been alleged to have been beaten and tied to a post in the market by local people on charges of attempted theft. After remaining stuck there all night, his little child rushed to the spot in the morning on hearing about the father’s condition. The child brought tea and bread along and later fed the bread to the father tied to the post with her own hands.

A video of this scene that took place at Bamrail Bazar on Saturday morning spread on social media and discussion started on the matter. In the video the child is seen standing beside the father tied to the post. At one stage she feeds the bread brought along to the father with her own hands. At that time several people are seen standing around.

After the video spread, many criticised the incident on social media. They also raised questions about confining someone in this way without verifying the truth of the theft allegation and taking the law into one’s own hands. At the same time many also commented that tying a person to a post is inhumane.

According to police, Anik Sardar was caught by local people while attempting to steal from a shop at Bamrail Bazar in Uzirpur upazila late on Friday night. Later he was tied to a post in the market. He remained there all night.

Police inspector of Uzirpur Police Station Faruk Hossen said police were sent to the spot on Saturday morning after receiving the news. However, local people freed Anik before police arrived. He also said details about the incident are being inquired into.
