Electricity, Road Transport and Railways Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan announced that if load shedding becomes necessary during the upcoming summer, it will begin in the capital city of Dhaka before affecting rural areas.

He made the statement during a press briefing held at the Railway Eastern Zone Conference Room at CRB in Chattogram on Friday evening (April 11).

Explaining the reasons behind load shedding, the adviser said, “There are mainly two causes—either a drop in electricity production or disruptions due to natural disasters or accidents.” He stressed that while uninterrupted power supply had been ensured during Ramadan, maintaining the same consistency throughout the summer might be difficult. However, he assured that any power cuts would follow a balanced approach, not disproportionately affecting rural areas as in the past.

“In case of power shortage, Dhaka will experience load shedding first, followed by other regions,” said the adviser. “We are trying our best to manage the situation efficiently.”

He also urged citizens to adopt power-saving habits, highlighting the rising demand for electricity with increasing temperatures. “Keeping AC units set at 25 degrees Celsius could save 1,000 to 2,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide,” he added.

Turning to Chattogram, the adviser emphasized the need for planned and inclusive development to transform the city into a modern and livable space. He stated that raising public awareness was essential to achieving this goal.

Addressing safety concerns on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway, the adviser acknowledged the growing number of accidents and stressed the need for urgent measures. Plans include the installation of road signs in high-risk areas and an upgrade of the highway to six lanes. Until then, public awareness remains critical to preventing fatalities, he noted.

The adviser also spoke on the poor condition of the railway hospital, revealing that a memorandum of understanding is being prepared to modernize the facility. “Specialist doctors will be recruited and the hospital will be equipped with modern medical technology to provide better services to the public,” he said. Renovation work is also planned for railway stations and public toilets.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, present at the event, highlighted the disappearance of many city lakes and reservoirs. Stressing their importance for mental well-being, he announced initiatives to restore and reopen Agrabad Dhebarpar, Askar Dighi, and Veloar Dighi for public use.

The event was also attended by Railway Secretary Md. Fahimul Islam, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam, CDA Chairman Engineer Md. Nurul Karim, and officials from various departments.
