Residents and businessmen in the capital's Mohammadpur area besieged Adabar Police Station and blocked roads in protest against extortion and mugging. The demonstration began around 1 am on Sunday, February 21.

According to local sources, a group of assailants attacked the owner and workers of an embroidery factory in Adabar area on Saturday evening demanding extortion money. Several people were hacked with sharp weapons and injured. Victims along with local businessmen and workers staged the siege demanding justice and an end to extortion and mugging in the area.

Protesters said a gang has been regularly collecting extortion and committing robberies in the area for a long time. They took to the streets demanding security. Despite the late hour, the area remained tense with protesters besieging the police station and chanting slogans.

Mohammadpur Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Md Abdullah Al Mamun said, "During salary distribution at a factory called Abir Embroidery on Saturday, an armed group of 10-12 people attacked with machetes. They attempted to snatch mobile phones and cash, injuring several workers. The injured were immediately taken to hospital."

He further said workers surrounded the house of the accused terrorist Russell following the incident. Not finding him, they detained his father. Police later brought Russell's father to the station for safety. An agitated crowd then gathered in front of the station and began protesting.

The police official said the factory owner has filed a case and legal proceedings are underway. Police are working to identify and bring to justice those involved in the attack on workers.

Meanwhile, local businessmen and residents have warned of tougher programmes if no permanent solution is found to curb extortion and mugging in the area.
