Locals torch 6 buses over five deaths in Bhanga accident, highway blocked

A mob torched at least six buses and blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway after a passenger bus ran over five people who had gathered to collect eggs spilled from an overturned truck in Bhanga, Faridpur.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, July 11, in the Soadi bus stand area of Algi union.

According to police and local sources, a truck carrying eggs overturned on the highway after a tyre burst. Local people gathered to collect the scattered eggs when a passenger bus from the Narail Express ran over them, killing five on the spot and injuring at least seven others.

Angry locals blocked the highway and set fire to at least six buses, creating a long tailback on both sides of the Dhaka-Khulna highway.

Among the deceased were the truck driver, Zainal, 27, Arif, 27, and Obaidur, 40, from Soadi area. The identity of the fifth victim could not be confirmed immediately. The injured were sent to hospitals in Bhanga, Faridpur and Dhaka.

Bhanga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Helal Uddin confirmed the deaths and said police are working to control the situation. Legal action will be taken over the accident and the arson attacks.
