After being missing at sea for 54 years, a fisherman named Syed Ahmed has finally made his way back home.

The event occurred in the Fazli Bari area, which is near the MP pool in Ward 5 of Hatia Municipality. His return has generated considerable excitement in the surrounding community.

Family members reported that Syed Ahmed was a victim of a tragic trawler sinking while fishing in the Qutubdia region approximately 54 years ago. Although many fishermen ventured back into the turbulent sea, no sign of him was ever discovered. Following an extensive search, the family concluded that he was likely deceased. At that time, his wife, Chamna Khatun, was holding their young child, Akram.

Relatives assert that Syed Ahmed somehow drifted to an unfamiliar part of India after the trawler sank. Subsequently, he spent years wandering among various mosques, shrines, and along roadsides. A significant portion of his life was spent in the Ajmer Sharif region of India.

Recently, he lost everything when he was assaulted by criminals in the Howrah station area of India. Following legal proceedings, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) repatriated him to Bangladesh.

Gradually making his way back to his village, he arrived home last Tuesday, guided by memories. Initially, no one in the family recognized him. Eventually, he was identified by his classmate Munshi Sareng, cousin Gedu Mia, and brother Abul Khair, also known as Zamindar, along with several elders.

Local resident Alfaz remarked that after so many years, Allah has brought him back to his family alive, which is a source of joy for everyone.

Son Akram expressed that his father vanished shortly after his birth. Until now, he had only heard tales about his father from others. It was an extraordinary experience for him to have his father close to him at this stage of his life.

However, some family issues have also emerged following his return. Akram claimed that certain relatives are procrastinating in transferring his father's responsibilities, and there has been a dispute regarding the money he possessed.
In this regard, Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kabir Hossain said, "The news of a fisherman's return after 54 years has created a huge stir in the area. Legal assistance will be provided if the family requests cooperation."
