Madrasa principal detained over sexual abuse of 12-year-old student in Savar

Police have detained the principal of a madrasa in Savar over the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old student.

The accused, Gazi H M Robiul Awal, principal of Herar Alo Model Madrasa in the Kamal Garments area of Savar, was detained on Wednesday afternoon (August 19) following a written complaint filed by the child's mother, police said.

Savar Police Inspector (Investigation) Nur Mohammad confirmed the detention.

According to the complaint, the principal offered to provide the girl with private Arabic lessons after she performed poorly in an examination about two months ago. Her mother agreed, hoping the additional lessons would help improve her studies.

The girl subsequently began attending private lessons in the principal's room. The complaint alleges that the principal took advantage of the situation and subjected her to inappropriate sexual behaviour, while also threatening her with consequences if she disclosed the incidents.

The child reportedly alleged that a similar incident occurred in the principal's room on Monday. She began crying and was allegedly threatened with death.

After returning home from the madrasa, the girl's mother noticed that she was distressed and asked what had happened. The child then disclosed the alleged abuse, according to the complaint.

During questioning, Robiul Awal reportedly admitted to the allegations, saying he had acted after being "deceived by Satan." His wife, Hafiza Begum, however, claimed she had known about the matter and had informed the child’s mother. She also alleged that her husband had talked about marrying the girl.

Police said the accused was taken into custody after receiving the written complaint and that preparations were underway to file a case.

"We will take legal action against the accused in accordance with the law," Inspector Nur Mohammad said.
