Police have recovered the body of a 12-year-old student from the bathroom of a Hafizia madrasa in the Jorakhamba area of Rayerbag in the capital's Kadamtali. An investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was a suicide or something else.

The body of Md Naim Sheikh was recovered from the bathroom on the third floor of the Rawzatul Ulum Hafizia Madrasa on Monday afternoon. Later, the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sub-Inspector Saddam Hossain of Kadamtali Police Station said the madrasa authorities claim that Naim committed suicide by hanging himself from the shower in the bathroom. However, cane injury marks were also found on the body. The post-mortem report is being awaited to determine the actual cause of death.

Meanwhile, the child's family has alleged that Naim died as a result of being beaten. Speaking in a tearful voice in front of the hospital, Naim's mother Nazma Begum said her son could not have committed suicide. She claimed that there are injury marks on various parts of the body and demanded justice in this incident.

Naim's maternal uncle, Suman, said Naim was a student of the Hifz section. He alleged that madrasa teachers had beaten him with a cane the previous day. He claimed that the incident could be linked to his death.

Naim's father, Babu Sheikh, is a rickshaw puller by profession. Naim was the elder of two brothers.

Police said the actual cause of death will be determined based on the post-mortem report and investigation. The authorities have not yet officially made any decision on whether it was a suicide or death from another cause.
