A madrasa teacher has been arrested in Netrokona’s Madan upazila after an 11-year-old student was found to be pregnant, in a case that has raised serious concerns over child safety.

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-14) arrested the accused, Amanullah Sagar, on Tuesday night (May 5) from Gouripur in Mymensingh. He is the director of Hazrat Fatema Tujjohura Mohila Qawmi Madrasa.

Confirming the development on Wednesday (May 6), Madan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Torikul Islam said the suspect is expected to be handed over to Netrokona district police following a press briefing in Mymensingh.

According to the case statement and local sources, the accused established the madrasa about four years ago. The victim had been living at her maternal grandfather’s house and studying there. Her mother works as a domestic worker in Sylhet after separating from the child’s father.

The incident came to light after the child fell ill and showed physical changes. Her mother returned from Sylhet and, upon questioning, the matter was revealed.

On April 18, the girl was taken to a clinic in Madan, where medical tests confirmed she was 24 weeks pregnant.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother filed a case with Madan Police Station last Thursday. Law enforcement agencies had been searching for the accused since then.

Further legal action is underway.
