Madrasa teacher arrested over rape allegation, 8 police injured preventing mob
Police have arrested a madrasa teacher named Atik Ullah in Barura upazila of Cumilla over allegations of raping a student. Eight police officers were injured in a scuffle with an agitated mob while trying to protect the accused from being lynched. Two more individuals were arrested in connection with the incident.
The incident took place on Wednesday (July 29) afternoon in the Adda Bazar area of the upazila.
According to police and local sources, allegations surfaced that teacher Atik Ullah had raped a child student at Faizune Madina Model Madrasa in the Adda area. As the news spread, locals gathered at the madrasa and surrounding areas. A team from Barura Police Station arrived at the scene after receiving the information.
The victim student alleged that after dinner, when other students had fallen asleep, he and another student were called to the office room. The other student later left, and the accused teacher allegedly committed the act and told him not to tell anyone.
After police took the accused teacher into custody, a section of the agitated mob attempted to lynch him. A scuffle broke out with police as they tried to control the situation. Eight police officers, including Sub-Inspector Mission Chowdhury, were injured. Police later safely took the accused to the station.
The arrested Atik Ullah is a resident of the Shashaiya area in Barura upazila. Two more individuals were arrested from the scene over charges of attacking police officers and obstructing government work.
Barura Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sanjay Sarkar said the accused teacher has been arrested and the process of filing a case in this regard is underway. Additionally, the attack on police and obstruction of government work will also be investigated, and necessary legal action will be taken accordingly.
