Mahfuz Alam attacked by AL activists in London
Awami League (AL) leaders and activists attempted to target Mahfuz Alam, adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Bangladesh’s interim government, in London.
The incident took place on Friday (September 12), following a seminar marking the one-year anniversary of the July Uprising in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh High Commission in London confirmed this in a post on the verified Facebook page on on Friday night (September 12).
The Bangladesh High Commission in collaboration with the University of London’s School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) organised the seminar.
According to the Bangladesh High Commission, a group of around 18 Awami League supporters gathered outside the venue, chanting slogans. While Mahfuz Alam attended the event without issue, two empty vehicles from the High Commission were targeted. Activists threw eggs at the cars parked at the venue.
At approximately 7:00pm, as a black BMW car of the High Commission was leaving the SWAS campus, activists again threw eggs and attempted to block the car's path. However, they were removed by the police.
The High Commission clarified that Mahfuz Alam was not inside the car; he had left in a separate vehicle via a different route.
Later that evening, Mahfuz Alam attended a discussion at the Bangladesh High Commission, which was attended by political representatives, students, and journalists.
The London Metropolitan Police has assured the High Commission of continued security for the adviser.
