Police have arrested the main accused in the destruction of hundreds of Babui chicks, eggs, and nests in Purba Guaton village, Shekherhat Union, Jhalakathi.

The arrested, Md Mobarak Ali Fakir, 65, was arrested by the Jhalakathi District Detective Branch (DB) from the Nesarabad area of Pirojpur district on Sunday evening (June 29).

The incident took place last Friday when a palm tree, home to over a hundred Babui bird nests, was felled in Purba Guaton village. The nests, containing eggs and chicks, fell to the ground and sank into the nearby water, resulting in the destruction of the eggs and the deaths of most of the chicks. While some adult birds managed to fly away, the majority of the birds were severely affected.

The act of tree cutting, which led to the deaths and destruction of the birds' nests, sparked widespread outrage on social media. In response, Md Masudur Rahman, a local UP member from Shekherhat Union, filed a formal case at Sadar Police Station against three individuals, including Mobarak Fakir.

Jhalakathi Superintendent of Police Ujjwal Kumar Roy confirmed the arrest of the primary suspect and stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused individuals involved in the incident.
