A man has been arrested for allegedly hacking his wife to death while she was asleep in Narail.

The incident took place around midnight in Bahirgram area of Sadar upazila on Tuesday (May 5).

The victim, Chandni Akhter Khadija, 20, was a resident of Phultala upazila in Khulna, while the accused, Sakib Sheikh, 25, hails from Damodar village in the same area.

The accused confessed to the killing during initial interrogation, police confirmed.

According to police and local sources, the couple had travelled from Khulna to visit a relative’s house in Narail on Monday. They reportedly had a history of frequent domestic disputes, allegedly linked to Sakib’s drug addiction and unemployment.

Police said that around 1:30am, Sakib attacked his wife with a sharp cutting tool while she was asleep, leaving her critically injured. Family members rushed her to Narail District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Investigators said an initial attempt was made to portray the incident as an accident, claiming the victim had fallen on a sharp object. However, inconsistencies in statements and evidence at the scene raised suspicion.

“Sensing discrepancies in the account, we interrogated the suspect, and he later admitted to killing his wife,” said Ajay Kumar Kundu, officer-in-charge of Narail Sadar Police Station.

Police have taken the accused into custody and further legal proceedings are underway.
