Man beaten to death in Sitakunda over accusation of burning youth alive
A man named Md Iran (40) was beaten to death by an agitated mob in Sitakunda, Chattogram, following allegations that he had burned a youth alive. The mob also set fire to his residence, police said.
The incident occurred around 1:30am on Sunday (July 26) in Ward No. 4 of Muradpur Union in the upazila. The deceased, Md Iran, was a resident of that union. Police said he was a listed drug trafficker and had six cases against him at Sitakunda Police Station, including two for murder.
Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahinul Islam said allegations had surfaced a few days ago that Iran and his associates had attempted to burn alive a youth named Naeem. Naeem died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital with severe burn injuries. The incident sparked widespread anger in the area.
The OC further said that after news of Naeem's death spread, locals detained Iran late on Sunday night and lynched him, resulting in his death on the spot. The agitated mob then set fire to his residence. Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Iran's body was recovered and sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said the incident is being investigated and legal action, including filing a case, is underway.
