Man beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Jamalpur
A man named Nur Mohammad, 45, has been beaten to death on suspicion of stealing fishing nets in the Jamuna River in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur. Two others were injured in the incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Barul area of Belgacha Union.
The deceased Nur Mohammad was the son of Moyen Sheikh from the Kunderpara area of Kamarjani Union in Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
Police said the victims had gone to the Barul area of the Jamuna River in a small boat around 11am when local fishermen chased them on suspicion of net theft. They fled to the Guthail area, where more fishermen joined the chase. They were eventually caught in the Ulia area and beaten, with Nur Mohammad dying at the scene and two others injured.
Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said locals chased them and beat them, suspecting they were thieves. Legal proceedings are underway.
