Man donates kidney to save wife in Shariatpur
In a powerful act of love and sacrifice, a man in Shariatpur has donated one of his kidneys to save his ailing wife, offering a rare example of personal courage and devotion.
Jasim Uddin, 36, a resident of Bashkathi village under Gosairhat upazila, stepped forward as a donor after his wife, Minara Begum, 32, was diagnosed with kidney failure following prolonged health complications, including high blood pressure.
Medical tests revealed that both of Minara’s kidneys had failed, while a tumour was also detected in her abdomen. Although the tumour was later treated at a private hospital in Dhaka, the family struggled to find a suitable kidney donor.
Minara’s mother initially volunteered but was deemed unfit due to health issues. With no viable alternative, Jasim decided to donate his kidney.
Following necessary medical evaluations, the transplant surgery was successfully carried out on March 5 at a specialised hospital in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area.
Minara is now recovering gradually under medical supervision and is staying in Dhaka with her family as she returns to normal life.
The couple, married since 2007, have one son who is currently studying in the ninth grade. Jasim had been working in Dhaka for years to support the family.
Speaking about the ordeal, Minara said the family had been deeply worried during her illness and that she initially tried to stop her husband from taking such a risk. “He didn’t listen. By the grace of Allah, we are both doing well now,” she said.
Jasim said his decision was driven by a simple resolve: “I wanted us to live together or not at all. Seeing her recover is the greatest reward for me.”
Local Union Parishad Chairman BM Nasir Uddin Swapan described the act as a “rare example of love and self-sacrifice.”
