A man has been hacked to death in Pabna’s Santhia Upazila.

He was a former member of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (ML Red Flag) group, according to the local police.

Saidur Rahman, the chief of Santhia Police Station, says the incident took place in the Ebtedayee Madrasah area of Rauti village around 9pm on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Bakul, 45, the son Rawshan Ali, a resident of the Upazila’s Dhulauri Union.

According to locals and police personnel, Bakul had renounced his extremist ties and surrendered to the authorities. He then started work as the driver of a horse-drawn cart to provide for his family.

On Sunday night, he was taking his paddy-laden cart to a nearby house when he was attacked. The perpetrators slit his throat and hacked up the body.

Locals informed the police after finding his body.

OC Rahman said: “Bakul was a former member of an extremist group and we have learned that there are multiple cases against him.”

Police have yet to uncover the motive for his murder.

“Details will be available after an investigation is conducted,” he added.
