Man held for 'killing' daughter-in-law over dowry
A housewife has reportedly been strangled to death by her father-in-law over dowry in Savar.
The incident took place at 3 pm on Saturday in Tetuljhara Mohalla of Hemayetpur area.
The victim is Lata Akter, 21. She used to work in a bag-making factory and live with her in-laws at a rented house in the area.
Locals captured the deceased's father-in-law Masud from the scene and tried to thrash him while her husband managed to flee.
Being informed, police rushed in, rescued the accused and brought him to the police station.
Police and locals said that Lata got married to Selim a year ago. Since the marriage, her husband and in-laws have been pressuring her for dowry. There used to be constant quarrels between them.
On Saturday afternoon, her husband and in-laws tortured her for not getting the dowry. Later, they strangled her to death, claimed locals.
The deceased's brother-in-law said: "After receiving the news in the afternoon, I went to Lata's house and found her dead. She was not wearing any clothes, there were injury marks on her neck. One hand looked broken." He claimed that she was killed after being raped.
He also said that Lata's father-in-law had fingernail scratches on his body. He has been detained and handed over to the police.
Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abbas said that based on the information from the locals, the police recovered Lata's body and conducted a preliminary investigation.
He also said that a drive is being conducted to arrest the deceased's husband. However, it is initially believed that she was beaten and strangled to death for dowry, said police.
