Man held trying to buy gold with Tk 57 lakh in counterfeit notes

Police have arrested a man for attempting to buy gold jewellery from a shop at Banani Super Market using an estimated Tk 57.05 lakh in counterfeit notes.

The accused, identified as Md Rubel Ahmed Fakir, 46, was detained on Thursday afternoon (August 6), while an accomplice managed to flee the scene.

According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the two men posed as customers and told shop staff they wanted to buy around 20 to 21 bhori of gold jewellery for a relative's wedding. After selecting the items, the pair pulled out bundles of cash from a black trolley bag to settle the bill. Shop employees grew suspicious of the notes and, upon checking, found them to be counterfeit.

Realising they had been caught, the two men attempted to flee. Locals managed to catch one of them while the other escaped. Banani police reached the scene after being alerted, took the detained man into custody, and recovered the Tk 57.05 lakh in fake currency from him.

Police said Rubel Ahmed Fakir faces a total of eight cases at various police stations across the country. Legal action has been initiated against him, and a manhunt is underway to arrest his fugitive accomplice.
