An elderly man has allegedly died after being struck by a motorcycle during a Jamaat-e-Islami motorbike showdown led by the party’s nominated candidate and central organisational secretary, Muhaddis Abdul Khalek, in Satkhira.

The incident took place at Badamtola Bazar area in Alipur Union under Sadar upazila on Saturday (November 22).

The deceased, Fazor Ali, 73, was a resident of Karigorpara of the upazila.

According to the victim’s nephew, Shamsuzzaman, Fazor Ali was crossing the road on his way to prayers when a bike from the procession hit him, leaving him critically injured. Locals rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His funeral was held that night at Badamtola.

Union Parishad member Iqbal Hossain said the rally started from the bypass roundabout near Satkhira Polytechnic College and was moving through different roads when the accident took place. Fazor Ali collapsed on the road after being hit and died before reaching hospital.

Satkhira Sadar Upazila Jamaat general secretary Habibur Rahman claimed the victim was a supporter of their party and that he fell after being hit by a motorcycle’s side mirror, leading to his death.

Mehedi Hasan, sub-inspector (SI) of Sadar Police Stataion, said, "The family did not file any complaint, so the incident has been recorded as an unnatural death.

"After initial investigation, the body was handed over to the family," he added.
