Man lynched by crowd over suspected theft in Munshiganj
A suspected theft incident turned deadly as a young man was beaten to death by a mob in Srinagar upazila in Munshiganj.
The incident took place in the Shyamsiddhi area of the upazila on Thursday morning (June 25).
The deceased was identified as Shahadat, 27, son of Shamsul Sheikh of the area. He was found dead early in the morning with his hands and feet tied beside the Motto Gram road.
According to police and local sources, residents allegedly detained Shahadat during the night over accusations of mobile phone theft. Local people reportedly gathered after announcements were made through a mosque loudspeaker, and he was subsequently assaulted.
Police recovered the body after receiving information from locals and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy.
Jewel Mia, officer-in-charge (OC) of Srinagar Police Station, said, "Peliminary information suggests Shahadat was caught by residents while allegedly attempting to commit theft in the area. He later died from injuries sustained during the beating."
Police Inspector (Investigation) Milton Dutta said Shahadat had several cases filed against him in the past. However, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the identities of those involved in the assault.
