Man sentenced to death for rape, murder of 7-year-old in Cumilla

A court in Cumilla has awarded the death penalty to Moynal Hossain, (32) for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Burichang upazila. The court also imposed a fine of tk one lakh on the convict.

Judge Abdul Hannan of the Cumilla Children's Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon (April 30).

The convict, Moynal Hossain, is the son of the late Khorshed Alam, hailing from Varella village in Burichang upazila.

Confirming the matter, the Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Children's Court, Badiul Alam Sujan, stated that in 2021, Moynal Hossain raped and murdered his neighbor’s daughter. Following the crime, he wrapped the child's body in polythene and hid it inside a septic tank. Police later recovered the body from the tank. The victim was a second-grade student.

The victim's mother filed a murder case at Burichang Police Station following the incident. After recording the testimonies of 17 witnesses, the court found Moynal guilty and sentenced him to death along with the monetary fine.
