A young man was shot in the right leg after assailants entered a house in North Badda in Dhaka on Saturday night (Setember 12).

The victim, identified as Rana, was attacked around 10pm at a house in the Moynarbagh Bow Bazar area behind Hossain Market. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency department around 2am and remains under treatment in serious condition, police said.

Rana told police that he had returned to his younger brother’s home after attending a dinner and was asleep when someone knocked on the door. His acquaintance Joy opened the door after receiving no response from outside.

According to Rana, Tamim and two others then entered the house, verbally abused him and shot him above the right knee before fleeing.

Rana’s relatives alleged that Tamim had been demanding extortion money from the business of Rana’s elder brother for a long time. They suspect the shooting may have been carried out after the demand was refused.

Inspector Habibur Rahman, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, said Rana is being treated in the hospital’s emergency ward. Police are looking into the incident.
