Man surrenders to police after killing wife, mother-in-law in Dhaka

A man surrendered to police on Sunday (August 2) after stabbing his wife and mother-in-law to death during a domestic dispute in Dhaka's Kalabagan area, police said.

The incident took place around 9:30am at a residence on Al-Amin Road in Kathalbagan, under Kalabagan Police Station.

The victims were identified as Farzana Akter Ratri, 20, and her mother, Firoza Begum, 40.

According to police, the suspect, Hridoy, also known as Shipon, went to Kalabagan Police Station shortly after the attack and surrendered. A murder case is being processed, and investigators have launched a formal probe.

Fazle Ashik, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kalabagan Police Station, said, "Preliminary findings suggest the killings stemmed from a family dispute."

Police said the couple had attended a family function in Mohammadpur on Saturday before spending the night at the home of Farzana's parents in Kathalbagan.

Investigators said an argument broke out between the husband and wife on Sunday morning. When Firoza intervened in support of her daughter, the suspect allegedly attacked both women with a kitchen knife.

Farzana died at the scene, while Firoza was critically injured and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors later pronounced her dead.

Police recovered Farzana's body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Local residents and police said the suspect, a pickup van driver, had been living with his wife and child in a rented apartment on Al-Amin Road.

Authorities said the investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
