Mass transfer of 27 police personnel in Mymensingh following Juba League’s flash procession

Twenty-seven police personnel, including the in-charge of the city's No. 1 Police Outpost, have been transferred en masse following allegations of negligence regarding a flash procession staged by the Jubo League (an associate organization of the Awami League, which has since been banned) in Mymensingh city.

Separate official orders were issued transferring them to various police stations across the district in the public interest on Monday (August 24). The district police stated that new personnel would soon be posted to the outpost.

Md. Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) for Mymensingh District, confirmed the matter on Monday evening.

The 27 transferred personnel include Mahabub Milki (In-charge of No. 1 Police Outpost), four Sub-Inspectors, five Assistant Sub-Inspectors, and 17 Constables.

Police sources reported that on August 21, Jubo League leaders and activists held a flash procession in the Ganginapar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the No. 1 Police Outpost. Questions arose regarding the conduct of the police personnel on duty at the time, leading to the decision to transfer the entire team.

Meanwhile, police have arrested 20 leaders and activists associated with the banned Awami League and its affiliate organizations over the past four days in connection with the procession. Those arrested include District Chhatra League Vice-President Himon Sheikh; Jubo League leaders Hamidur Rahman Akash, Masud, Obaidul Haque, and Tanvir (alias Limon); Cultural Alliance leader Farhad; and others.

Md. Shibirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station, stated that Sub-Inspector Mazhar filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act regarding the August 21 procession. The case names 43 individuals, with an additional 20 to 30 unidentified persons listed as accused.

He added that the 20 arrested individuals have been sent to jail via the court, and police operations to apprehend the remaining accused are ongoing.
