Massive 25km traffic jam strikes Dhaka-Sylhet highway

A severe 25-kilometer-long traffic jam has brought movement on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway to a near standstill, as deteriorating road conditions continue to worsen.

According to Khatihata Highway Police Station OC Mamun Rahman, the jam began around the Bishwa Road to Ashuganj Golchattar area and has been growing since Thursday night (July 10). "Vehicles are taking over an hour to cover what should be a five-minute distance," he said.

The situation has been caused by large potholes and broken sections on a key 10.5-kilometer stretch of the highway, making it unfit for regular traffic. Heavy rains in recent days have exacerbated the damage, and long queues of vehicles are now being reported in both directions.

Highway police, along with local law enforcement, are on the ground attempting to ease the congestion, but slow-moving vehicles and reckless driving have made traffic control difficult.

Authorities have urged drivers to remain patient and avoid the affected routes if possible.
