A wave of grief swept through Tanore’s Koelhat Purbo Para as thousands attended the funeral of two-year-old Sajid, who died after falling into an abandoned deep tube well.

The funeral was held Friday morning (December 12) near the Nekkhiri graveyard, where he was laid to rest following the Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers) prayer at 10:30am.

The village came to a standstill as the news of his death spread—shops shut down, fields emptied and people rushed to the child’s home to offer condolences. Sajid’s body reached the village late Thursday night, prompting emotional scenes as family members and neighbours broke down in tears.

Sajid had gone missing on Wednesday afternoon after falling into the open shaft. Fire service personnel dug nearly 40 feet and conducted a 32-hour rescue operation. He was pulled out on Thursday evening, but doctors at the hospital later declared him dead.

Mourners of all ages gathered at the funeral ground early in the morning. Relatives wept as the child’s shrouded body was brought in. His mother repeatedly tried to reach for him, overcome by grief.

The Janaza was led by Qazi Maulana Mizanur Rahman, after which attendees prayed for the child’s salvation and strength for the bereaved family.

Silence fell over the graveyard as the small coffin was lowered into the ground, broken only by the sound of sobs. Villagers said they had rarely witnessed a tragedy of such emotional impact.
