Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman on Saturday (August 16) inaugurated the Janmashtami procession at Dhakeshwari National Temple, expressing hope that the ideals of Lord Krishna would inspire unity and coexistence.

He also called for harmony and equal rights for all communities in Bangladesh.

“This country belongs to everyone. There will be no discrimination here. All citizens will live peacefully and celebrate religious festivals with joy,” he said at the ceremony, also attended by the Navy and Air Force chiefs.

Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan said the teachings of Lord Krishna encourage courage against injustice and strengthen the path of truth, while Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hasan urged for mutual tolerance to build a stronger Bangladesh.

The chiefs of the three services jointly lit the inaugural lamp before the colourful procession began from Palashi intersection and concluded at Bahadur Shah Park in the capital.
