Miscreants on Saturday night vandalized, looted, and set fire to the home of Awami League Presidium Member and former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya in Chandpur.

The incident occurred at two buildings on his property in Mohanpur, Matlab North upazila.

Upon receiving the news, the army, police, and fire service brought the situation under control.

Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain, deputy assistant director of Chandpur Fire Service, said: “We received reports of a fire around 11pm. The ground floors of two three-story buildings in Maya Chowdhury’s residence were set ablaze. Fire service teams quickly controlled the fire.”

Additional Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle), Khairul Kabir Chowdhury, said: “We learned in the evening that former MP Maya Chowdhury’s home had been vandalized and looted. We responded promptly with the army, police, and fire service. Although the ground floors were damaged, the fire was contained swiftly, preventing further spread. We are investigating those involved in this incident.”

Matlab North upazila BNP General Secretary Nurul Haque Jitu said: “We consider this a heinous act and do not support it in any way. None of our family members are involved in this incident. Our leader is Tarique Rahman, and we do not engage in violent politics. Local reports suggest that an internal dispute among their factions might have led to this incident.”
