The number of patients admitted with measles-like symptoms at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) has fallen below 100, with no new deaths reported in the last 24 hours, hospital authorities said on Saturday (May 9).

According to hospital data, 9 new patients were admitted in the past day, while 10 recovered and were discharged, bringing the number of current inpatients down to 99.

Since the outbreak began, a total of 968 suspected cases have been admitted, while 55 deaths have been recorded among patients classified as “suspected measles” cases. Officials said the figures are subject to change following laboratory confirmation.

The hospital, a 1,200-bed tertiary care facility and the main referral centre for northern Bangladesh, has been under sustained pressure due to a high patient load, with daily admissions and occupancy far exceeding capacity.

Health officials noted that a significant proportion of affected children are under six months old, raising additional clinical concerns. However, they added that not all suspected cases have tested positive for measles in laboratory analysis.

Hospital authorities said dedicated isolation units and a separate pediatric corner remain operational, while medical teams continue to provide care despite staffing constraints.

Officials described the recent decline in admissions and rise in recoveries as a sign of easing pressure, though monitoring and treatment efforts are continuing.
